Physical therapy a health care therapy that is concerned to evaluate, diagnose and treat disorders that are found in the musculoskeletal system. Physical therapy main goal is to restore maximum functionalities of each patient. Physical therapy utilizes massage, exercise, electricity and heat and cold.
Physical therapy is given by licensed physical therapists. They will diagnose, evaluate as well as manage the therapy plan of the patient because each patient varies and it is the work of the physical therapists to create individualized plans for each patient.
Generally, it is the doctor who will order to the patient to undergo physical therapy. Oftentimes, the patients who undergo physical therapy are newborn babies, children and adults particularly geriatrics.
Physical therapy is useful in treating muscular and joint problems, as well as disorders, injuries and cardiopulmonary diseases.
Given enough time, physical therapy can help the patient to live back to their old lives before their injury.
Accordingly, there are five specialty areas in the field of physical therapy and these are:
- Orthopedic - Orthopedic physical therapy is use to treat and manage injuries that affects the muscles, joints, tendons and bones of the body. This type of physical therapy is common in sports injuries and arthritis.
- Neurological - Neurological physical therapy is given to patients who have neurological disorders like Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord and stroke.
- Cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation - this type of therapy is given to patients who had bypass surgery, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD),
And heart attacks.
- Pediatric therapy - this is a specialized therapy that is used to improve the balance, coordination as well as the cognitive processing of children who have developmental delays, cerebral palsy and other related disorders.
- Geriatric - this therapy focus on the aging adults. This therapy aims to give mobility, decrease pain and increase fitness activities as they reach old age.
